Trailer Brakes, Lights and Airlines: Passing DOT Inspection

Most out-of-service violations come down to a handful of trailer items. Here is what inspectors look at.

Trailer Brakes, Lights and Airlines: Passing DOT Inspection

Lights and reflectors

Burned-out marker, brake or tail lights are one of the most common violations - and one of the easiest to fix. Walk the trailer and check every lamp before you roll.

Brakes and air system

Out-of-adjustment slack adjusters, worn linings, and air leaks at glad hands or chambers will all flag. A dragging or weak brake is both a violation and a safety risk.

Tires and wheels

Watch for low tread, sidewall damage, and loose or missing lug nuts. A flat or under-inflated tire on a tandem can sneak up on you.

Coupling and landing gear

Inspectors check the fifth wheel, kingpin and landing gear for play and damage. A worn fifth wheel is a serious find.
