1. Get to safety first
If the truck is still moving, ease toward the right shoulder or an exit ramp and get as far from live lanes as you can. On I-285 the shoulders are tight and traffic is fast - distance from the lanes is everything.
2. Make yourself visible
Hazards on. Set out your triangles - one about 10 feet behind, one at 100 feet, one at 200 feet - so traffic has time to react. At night, reflective gear is worth its weight in gold.
3. Know your location
Note the nearest mile marker, exit number, or cross street before you call. On the Perimeter, telling dispatch you are on the inner loop versus the outer loop, near a specific exit, shaves real time off the response.
4. Call a mobile mechanic before a tow
A lot of roadside breakdowns - dead batteries, air leaks, a blown hose, a sensor fault - can be fixed right where you sit. A mobile diesel tech can often get you rolling for far less than a tow plus shop time. Call first and describe the symptoms.
5. When a tow is the right call
If it is a major engine or driveline failure, towing to a shop is the safe move. A good mobile outfit will tell you straight which way to go - and can tow you themselves if needed.
